Gen Z Isn’t Walking In to Apply—And Businesses Need to Catch Up

There was a time when job seekers walked into businesses, asked, “Are you hiring?“, and filled out an application on the spot. Not anymore.
For Gen Z (ages 14-27), that approach feels awkward, outdated, and pointless. They’ve grown up in a world where everything happens online —shopping, socializing, and now, job searching. If businesses don’t adapt, they risk missing out on an eager,  tech-savvy workforce.
Why Gen Z Avoids Walk-In Applications
–  It’s all digital now. Most companies require online applications. Some even refuse walk-ins.
–  They hate cold introductions. Gen Z is comfortable texting and using social media—not walking in to ask for work.
–  It’s a waste of time. Hiring managers are rarely available, and most businesses just direct applicants to apply online anyway.
–  They want control.  This generation values flexible work, gig jobs, and side hustles over rigid schedules.
–  COVID-19 changed everything. The pandemic killed the in-person job hunt. Most companies never brought it back.
What Employers Must Do to Stay Relevant
Businesses relying on walk-in applications are losing. To attract Gen Z talent, they need to:
Make applying easy and digital. No one wants to fight a clunky system.
Meet them where they are.  Social media, mobile apps, and text-based hiring are key.
Offer flexibility.  The 9-to-5 grind doesn’t appeal anymore.
Build a strong online presence. Gen Z researches employers before applying. If you don’t stand out, they move on.
